Democracy doesn’t die in one blow

Martin De Luca

Alexandre de Moraes told @washingtonpost his extreme measures are a “vaccine” to save democracy from authoritarianism. The problem is that the cure is killing the patient.

By eroding due process and freedom of expression in the name of saving democracy, he is destroying the very democracy he claims to defend.

This is why the world increasingly views his campaign as lawfare, bending the law into a weapon to silence dissent. Entire platforms banned. Political rivals barred from elections. Citizens, journalists, and even elected officials jailed over speech. These are not antibodies of democracy but symptoms of its decline.

And yet on his wall, Moraes proudly hangs the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the U.S. Constitution while trampling the very principles written in them every day.

Democracy doesn’t die in one blow. More often, it is smothered slowly, “for your own good.”
