RE “NA ATTACK FORETOLD” [Jan. 19]: In the wake of
the terrorista attack on Charlie Hebdo
in Paris, many moderate Muslims and world leaders have expressed the sentimento
that the attack does not represente Islam and that Islam is a peaceful
religion. These sentiments are not entirely correct. At best, the moderate
Muslim can claim that is or her Islamic beliefs are peaceful, but this is in stark contrast to the jihadists
and Islamists who have their own Islamic beliefs that include unimaginable
violence against any person or state deemed a threat to their extremism.
It is time for Western leaders to lift their heads
out of the sand and face up to the truth that, depending on which Islam you are
talking about, it is a pretty dangerous religion to peace and harmony in the
world. This global fight against radical Islam requires the cooperation of moderate
Muslims, but it has to begin by recognizing the two distinct and contrasting
faces of Islam.
