Russia’s Support For Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan Isn’t Surprising

Andrew Korybko

Top “Non-Russian Pro-Russian” influencers from the Alt-Media Community are responsible for misleading the public about its policy towards this conflict and the West Asian Wars in general

Many observers from the Mainstream Media (MSM) and the Alt-Media Community (AMC) alike were surprised by Russia’s support for Trump’s Gaza peace plan. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was the first to express such a position by declaring that “Russia always supports and welcomes any steps by Trump that seek to avert the tragedy that is now unfolding. We want this plan to be realized, so that it may help steer events in the Middle East toward a peaceful path.”

This was followed by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who said that “Russia has always called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to bloodshed in Gaza. We believe that any measures and initiatives aimed at this deserve to be supported.” Putin then predictably spoke on this topic after being asked about it during the Q&A session that followed his keynote speech at the Valdai Club’s latest annual meeting last week. Here’s what he said:

“We are now learning more about President Trump’s initiatives. I believe there may yet be some light at the end of the tunnel…Russia is generally prepared to support it. Provided, of course—we must carefully examine the proposals made—it leads to the ultimate goal we’ve always talked about. Russia has always—starting in 1948 and then in 1974, when the relevant UN Security Council resolution was adopted—advocated for the creation of two states: Israel and a Palestinian state.”

The reason why Russia’s support for Trump’s Gaza peace plan surprised so many observers is because they were misled by some top “Non-Russian Pro-Russian” (NRPR) influencers into thinking that Putin is secretly anti-Zionist and allied with Iran against Israel as part of some plan to jointly liberate Palestine. The MSM considers this conspiracy theory to be something bad while many in the AMC consider it to be something good and that’s why both amplify it. The problem, however, is that there’s no truth to it.

Putin’s quotes about Israel from the official Kremlin website, which were collected here from the years 2000-2018, prove that he’s actually a proud lifelong philo-Semite who agrees with the Jewish State that some Palestinian attacks carried out in pursuit of national liberation are indeed acts of terrorism. He also importantly didn’t intervene to help Hezbollah in fall 2024 or Iran in summer 2025 when both were being bombed by Israel. This was due to Russia’s balanced approach towards the West Asian Wars.

Readers can learn more about it here, which also enumerates nearly two dozen analyses from October-December 2023, but the point is that all of this was always public. Nevertheless, false perceptions about Russian policy towards Israel still proliferated due to the soft power policy known as “Potemkinism”, or the calculated creation of alternative realities for soft power purposes. This analysis here explains it more in detail. Readers will realize how powerful and lasting its impact on global perceptions has been.

Ultimately, observers should rely on official statements and their own intuition when trying to understand Russian policy, not the interpretations pushed by top NRPR influencers from the AMC. Many of them practice “Potemkinism”, and those responsible for Russian soft power still don’t believe that this is counterproductive. The resultant disconnect between popular interpretations of Russian policy and the reality thereof explains the widespread surprise over Russia’s support for Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
